In December 1984, the lives of Carol Porter, a
registered nurse and Hurt Porter, a former radio announcer/record promoter changed forever. After discovering that children
living near their home were eating out of a dumpster, the Porters went into action. Finding apartments without electricity,
running water or adequate heat, the Porters embarked on a personal mission to feed all 82 children in the complex. To date,
Kid-Care, the nation's first meals on wheels program for children, has delivered well over 1 million meals to kids in the
Houston
metroplex.
In the name of Kid-Care
Carol and Hurt have accepted over 80 international, national and local awards. Among them President George H. Bush, the
Points of Light Award(866th), The Volunteer Action Award given by President Clinton, the Lewis Hine Award, the Maxwell
Coffee 100 Real Heroes Award, the Publisher's Clearing House Good As Gold Award and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Community
Service Award. Texas Monthly named Carol a "Texas20" one of the 20 most influential people in the state. In April 1997, Carol
and Hurt were invited to the President's Summit for America's Future. Kid-Care was selected one of the 50 best teaching examples in
the nation. Carol and Hurt shared their vision of a hunger-free society in Austria,
Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, and throughout America.
Mrs. Porter consulted with Nora Puyana de Pastrana, First Lady of Columbia S.A., in development oh her "National Breakfast"
program presently is in collaboration with the Department of Education in Cartagena, South America, in developing feeding
projects within their war-torn community.
The Porters have been
featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, CBS This Morning, and "Person of the Week" on The ABC Evening News, Good Morning America,
CNN,ABC Special "John Stossel Goes to Washington" and many
other international, national and local programs. Kid-Care stories have appeared in USA Today, New York Times, The Washington
Post, People Magazine, Los Angeles Times, Ladies Home Journal and many other publications.
Mrs. Porter collaborated on
the formation of the present format of the "Good Samaritan Act, Senate Bill N0.215, signed into law by former Governor of
Texas and Now president George W. Bush.
January 29.2001, The Porters
met with President Bush for his announcement of his Faith-Based and Community Initiative
Division.
Carol published her first book,
a soft covered book on volunteerism titled, One Act of Kindness to benefit the Kid-Care program. One
Act of Kindness (The Kid-Care story), Hard cover edition, is presently being prepared.
On July 2001, Kid-Care
was conferred with "NGO in Roster Consultative Status with the Economic and Social
Council of the United Nations".
On May 10, 2002 during the 27th
World Session for Children at the United Nations, Carol conducted a workshop "Ending
Hunger Among Children Globally Through a Meals on Wheels Concept".
On June 2002 Carol was featured
as a "Main Platform Speaker" for the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT).
